Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I already pay taxes & I thought our public schools offer these programs?
I understand the frustration of already paying taxes. Each year Americans spend over $9,000 per student for a public school education. Private schools cost on average $3,500 each year per student yet produce 20% higher scores than their public school peers. Home school students spend about $500 a year and achieve 10% higher scores than their private school peers and 30% above their public school peers. In spite of the enormous expenditure by states on primary school education, most classroom activity is geared towards performance on standardized tests rather than learning. Additionally, programs in math, science, and the arts are the first to be cut when schools encounter financial challenges; this is why so many of these programs are supported by outside fundraising efforts by the public schools themselves. We focus our efforts on children that have limited access to science and math learning opportunities.
Why should I donate to this organizations rather than other charities?
We understand that there are many requests for your charitable giving from many worthwhile causes. We believe the cause to increase educational opportunities is the most important reasons to give. We are the only program available providing scholarships to allow children and teens an opportunity to challenge their math and science gifts. We specifically focus on needy families and provide opportunities to students that have proven a desire to explore math or science at a level higher than their grade level.
What programs do you offer?
We are always changing to meet the needs of our children, donors, board of directors and your requests. Each year we request our volunteers and parents to advise us on what their needs are and how to best support them. We plan to offer scholarships for families who cannot afford to send their children to science camps at top universities each summer. Additionally, our signature program benefits a small group of students through sponsorships of chemistry classes and labs affiliated with a SouthBay home school academy.
My child needs help in reading, art and history?
While we do believe that these areas are critical to your child’s development we are focusing our efforts on science and math education. We have placed an emphasis on math and science because we know of few organizations that offer similar programs. If you email us, we can recommend some additional resources in areas outside of math and science.
How do I apply for the Scholarships?
Applications for scholarships will be accepted in spring of each year and awarded in time for summer camp and the beginning of the fall school year. See the Scholarships section for current details.
